Book Review “The Titans Curse”

Percy Jackson is back in the third book in the series. Percy visits a school with Annabeth and Thalia, daughter of Zeus. Percy meets his best friend Grover and he finds two half bloods who do not know who their parents are. Percy, Thalia, and grover soon met a hunter girl named Zoe Nightshade. They got to camp half-blood and have to go on a quest to rescue Annabeth and Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Along the way, they meet new enemies and new Gods. Sooner or later, Percy discovers the mind blowing secret about the half bloods. This is a really good book to read. I would say it’s a five out of five. Read the book to find out the secrets and learn about the chilling prophecy of the Titans curse.

Book Review “The Sea of Monsters”

The Sea of Monsters is the sequel of Rick Riordan’s hit Lighting Thief. The story is about Percy Jackson. He is a demigod. Demigods are half-human, half-God. Percy is the son of Poseidon, god of the seas; his mother is a mere mortal. He is sent on a quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece. The Fleece is the only thing to heal Thalia’s tree which was poisoned. The tree is a shield for camp half-blood. If that tree dies the camp shield will be powerless and monsters will flood the camp. They must fight horrible Lulce and a Cyclops named Polyphemus. The ending is a shocker! Read the book it’s awesome!!!

As long as they stay awake they are protected, but if they fall asleep there is no escape. Dodger Baseball

As you all know baseball season is coming. When it’s baseball season I usually have money. What I mean by that is this times of season people love to gamble and I’m one of them. My favorite team is the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are a great team and in the NL West. The four teams in the NL West are the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the San Diego Padres. The hardest opponent is the San Diego Padres in my opinion. One of the Dodgers good hitters is Matt Kemp, he plays center field. So for us Dodger fans I hope we do good this season. I think the Dodgers will be good because they are a comeback team. A comeback team is when your losing and you come back towards the end of the game. Personally, my favorite player is Rafael Furcal. The reason I like him is because he knows how to do such amazing things. He could bunt good, throw good, and even steal bases. I like players that are fast and Furcal is fast

Today I’m going to interview Luis Espinoza. I’m going to ask him a few questions about how he feels and what he thinks about the marathon.

Apolonio: Luis how many times have you ran the marathon?
Luis: this will be my second time running the marathon.

Apolonio: How long will it take to complete the marathon?
Luis: It will take between 4:30 or 5:00 hours to complete the marathon.

Apolonio: When you run do you run with a partner or do you run alone?
Luis: I usually run alone, but ether is times when I decide to run with a partner.

Apolonio: Do you really enjoy running the marathon?
Luis: Not much, but it also depends how I’m feeling that day.

Apolonio: What so you’re parents think about you running such a long distance?
Luis: They are worried about me not being able to last the course, but when they see me cross the finish line they are very happy.

Apolonio: How do you feel after you finish running the marathon?
Luis: I feel very tired, but at the same time very happy.

Apolonio: Do you have a snack before you run?
Luis: No I do not have a snack before the run.

Apolonio: Do you practice? If you do how many times a week?
Luis there is practice 2 times a week, but I only go time.

Apolonio: If you have a chance to run the marathon next year would you do it?
Luis: No because I’m, going to join the soccer tram for high school nest year, but I will run it the year after that.

Lay-Offs

There are many teachers, counselors, nurses, and librarians getting laid off, mostly teachers. The economy is really bad right now. The school district doesn’t have enough money. There are several teachers that had a pink slip here in Nightingale about having to be laid off. I asked some questions to Mr. Meyerhof about the lay-offs and this is what he answered.
How many teachers are getting laid off?
-3,600 teachers, counselors, nurses, and librarians in the LA School District and 10 at Nightingale. ½ of all the 6th grade teachers who received a note was out librarian.
2. What happens to the students if their teachers are gone?
-They may have teachers who never taught at Nightingale including assistant principals from other schools. They may also have a teacher who doesn’t speak or understand Spanish. Luckily at Nightingale we receive QEIA money which allows us to lower class to 23 in 8th grade, 25 in 7th and 6th grade, but at other middle schools, class size will go to 37 students in a class and in high school, 43 students in a class.
3. Why are they getting laid off?
-The Superintendent Ramon Cortines and the other LAUSD School Board have decided that the classroom, the students, and the teachers are less important than consultants (people who give advice and training about different subjects) who cost the District $200 million, the TV station ($20 million) and the Periodic Testing ($50 million). All of the money together could save most of the jobs in the LA District.
4. Is there anything students can do to prevent teachers from getting laid off?
-Students can join the “Save Our School” club which meets every Friday at lunch in the auditorium, participate in the marches in front of the school. You can also write letters to the Superintendent and the School Board to ask them to stop the layoffs and bring the teachers and the staff back. Most of the layoffs could be stopped if the contract is approved. We voted on April 7th, 8th, and 9th. The teachers, counselors, the library, and substitutes voted, we will get at 6% pay cat to help save jobs, but more money is needed for our school.
